Qualification for TWG 2021

Qualification for TWG 2021

There are still 905 days until the start of The World Games 2021 in Birmingham, Alabama. The participating federations will use the time to determine their best athletes for the fight for gold at the eleventh edition of the multi-sports event (15 - 25 July 2021).

Lacrosse has already completed the qualifications for their competitions on the official programme of The World Games 2021. This year, further participants from other sports will be awarded places for The World Games appearance. These sports will include Fistball, Muaythai, Korfball and Orienteering.

The hot phase will then begin in 2020, and participants in The Word Games 2021 should be confirmed in early 2021. But as always, there are exceptions: In the gymnastic disciplines it is not the athletes themselves who qualify for the title fights; they merely secure a place in the competition for their nation. The national federation then decides who actually travels to The World Games. Muaythai wants to keep individual qualification places available until spring 2021.

Basically, qualification for The Word Games works in the way that only the best in each discipline can go to the start. The decision about which criteria to apply is up to the individual International Federations.

As a general rule, the federations use three criteria to determine their top athletes: the ranking of world championships or other qualifying events, the world ranking list, or a points system that is linked to participation in certain events. In Canoe Polo, Squash or Powerlifting, for example, the results at the World Championships are decisive. Waterski and Billiards use the world rankings at the end of 2020. The athletes or teams in each sport shall come from at least three continents.

Ju-Jitsu fighters can take part in no less than six events - from world championships to national championships - to gather points for the ticket to Birmingham. The situation is similar in Muaythai, but, in this sport, the winners of some top events qualify directly. In Boules, the results of the most important competitions in 2019 and 2020 are counted, one of which is the World Cup in Progressive Shooting 2019 from 6 to 10 February in Saint-Vulbas (France). A number of sports, for example Sumo and Beach Handball, also have ‘wild cards’ available for participants from the USA. In Lacrosse, the United States doesn't need a wild card at all. The team won the World Cup against Canada and then a few weeks later, the gold medal at The World Games in Wroclaw, Poland.

The World Games is a multi-sport event staged every four years by the International World Games Association under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee. The 11th edition of The World Games will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, 15-25 July 2021. 3,600 athletes from over 30 sports and 100 countries will take part in the Games.
