Recap Day #10: Swiss heartbreak

The Swiss Floorball team who were seeking a maiden international tournament victory had their hearts broken by Sweden, in a pulsating and dramatic gold medal match in Wroclaw today. Goals were traded on a regular basis, within the first five minutes Sweden had opened the scoring and Switzerland had come back strongly to take a 2-1 lead. Midway through the second period, Swiss minds were convinced they were going to be awarded the most prized medals, as they opened up a seemingly impregnable 5-2 lead. However a devastating burst of Scandinavian scoring including a last second penalty penalty stroke saw the game tied up at five goals apiece going into the third period. Sweden scored the decisive goal and a late empty netter left Switzerland with silver consolation, but it could easily have been gold.

The Swiss were also second best in today's Tug of War final, they did win one pull, but it was the British team that claimed the gold in the decisive third contest. Iran also failed to net a gold medal in their two Muaythai finals and one Archery final, their three silvers meaning they leave Poland with a very creditable 12 medals in total.

In Canoe Polo Germany had comfortable victories in both the men's and women's finals, triumphing 4-1 and 5-0 over Italy and France respectively. The final team competition was the Lacrosse final where USA repeated their World Cup victory over Canada a week ago. So USA will head to their home edition of The World Games in Brimingham, Alabama as the defending champions. Will they prevail again in 2021? Which new athletes and teams will arise in the next edition of The World Games? Join us again in four years time to find out. Thank you and dobre from Wroclaw 2017.
