New sports, celebrity partners & more

There are less than two years until the Opening Ceremony of The World Games 2022, and the excitement for the global event in Birmingham, Alabama, is continuing to grow rapidly.

It’s been a whirlwind summer for The World Games 2022, with announcements ranging from new sports, celebrity partners and more.

If you happen to have missed any of the exciting news of the past few weeks, here’s a recap of everything that’s been going on.

Charles Barkley Named Honorary Co-Chair: Charles Barkley, a native of Leeds, Alabama, a standout basketball player at Auburn University and NBA Hall of Famer, has joined The World Games 2022 as an Honorary Co-Chair.

In his role with The Games, Barkley will participate in several events, including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

During his 16-year career, Barkley was named an NBA All-Star 11 times, captured two Olympic gold medals with Team USA and was named league MVP in 1993.

The former MVP will also represent, support and promote the message and missions of The World Games 2022 throughout his partnership.

Flag Football Added to Sports Program in Partnership with NFL: On July 15, it was announced that, in partnership with the National Football League, Flag Football has been added to the sports program of The World Games 2022.

Hosted at Birmingham’s historic Legion Field, Flag Football @TWG2022 Presented by the NFL will feature eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams from around the world. It will mark the first time Flag Football has appeared in The World Games.

As a Premier Partner of The World Games 2022, the NFL will serve as the presenting sponsor of Flag Football and will promote The Games across its international platforms over the next two years leading up The Games.

Custom License Plates Available: You can now show off your love for The World Games 2022 anytime you go.

In Alabama, the host state of The World Games 2022, custom The World Games license plates are now available.

The specialty plate costs $50, with $48.75 of each purchase going back to The World Games 2022 Birmingham to support the planning and execution of the event.

Production of The World Games 2022 specialty plates requires 250 purchase commitments by 1st of August 2021. Once 250 commitments are secured, the Alabama Department of Revenue will begin production and distribution of all orders.

These are exciting times for The World Games 2022, and there’s even more excitement to come throughout the next two years!

 The World Games is a multi-sport event staged every four years by the International World Games Association under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee. The 11th edition of The World Games will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, 7-17 July 2022. 3,600 athletes from over 30 sports and 100 countries will take part in The World Games.
