Congratulations to the Athletes of the Day on Wednesday at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, China: five-time gold medallist in speed inline skating Jhoan Guzman of Spain, and British powerlifter Jurins Kengamu, the World Games champion in classic middleweight. Each athlete received a certificate and a watch courtesy of Tissot, along with a special gift from the Local Organizing Committee.
The Man of the Games: Jhoan Guzman
That’s what you call a clean sweep. Five starts in Inline Speed Skating earned Jhoan Guzman five gold medals at The World Games 2025. Together with Germany’s Nina Holt, who also claimed five titles in lifesaving, the 29-year-old became the most successful athlete of the Games.
Here are the events Guzman won: Road Men’s Sprint 100m, Track Men’s Dual Time Trial 200m, Road Men’s 1 Lap, Track Men’s Sprint 500m+D, and Track Men’s Sprint 1,000m. In addition, he set a world record on Wednesday with a time of 9.53 seconds in the 100-metre sprint. After one of his victories, Guzman said: “I’m happy with the medal and how I won it.” His triumphs not only marked his first titles at The World Games, but also demonstrated his complete dominance of the competition.
Better Late Than Never: Jurins Kengamu
Britain’s Jurins Kengamu made his debut at The World Games at the age of 36—and crowned it with gold in the men’s classic middleweight Powerlifting discipline. A total of 872 kilos was way more than enough for a commanding victory, with runner-up Enahoro Asein of Hungary lifting more than 60 kilos less.
Friendly and modest in demeanour, Kengamu impressed with 317 kilos in the squat, 195 kilos in the bench press, and 360 kilos in the deadlift. His hard-earned success did not come out of nowhere: last year, Kengamu competed in the -83 kilo class at the World Championships and took the title with a world-record total of 845 kilos.
