The International World Games Association (IWGA) is proud to name Laura Burgos of Mexico as the Athlete of the Month for June 2025. A fierce competitor and a beacon of inspiration in Muaythai, Burgos has earned this distinction following an outstanding string of achievements and in anticipation of her qualification to The World Games 2025, set to take place this August in Chengdu, China.

Burgos, competing in the 54kg category, continues to carve out a legendary career in the world of Muaythai. After capturing a silver medal at The World Games 2022, she has since gone from strength to strength—securing back-to-back gold medals at the IFMA World Championships in 2024 and 2025 and claiming the King’s Cup and a Challenger Muaythai title on the acclaimed Emmy-nominated reality show The Challenger Battleground.

Now, as she sets her sights on Chengdu, Burgos reflects on how far she has come.

“The World Games 2022 was my very first international competition,” she shared in a recent interview with IWGA. “Since then, I’ve focused on the little details and worked hard to become a better version of myself. Same passion, but now with more tools and experience.”

Being named Athlete of the Month adds another prestigious accolade to her résumé and marks her as one of the top athletes to watch at TWG 2025.

“It’s a huge honour,” said Burgos. “To be chosen among the best of the best across all sports—and to represent Mexico on such a global stage—is beyond my expectations. I’m excited to prove myself in Chengdu.”

Outside the ring, Burgos plays a crucial role in shaping the future of Muaythai. As Vice Chair of the IFMA Athletes' Commission and the Pan American athletes’ representative, she works to amplify the voices of athletes across Latin America, ensuring they have a place at the table in the sport’s global development.

“It’s challenging to balance it all,” she admitted, “but helping pave the way for younger athletes is a responsibility I take seriously. I want to make sure the next generation has opportunities and support.”

Her journey has made Burgos a role model for young fighters, especially women in combat sports. Her advice to them is clear:

“Choose what you want to be, then work to be the best at it. Heart and discipline—those are everything.”
