With just 16 days to go until The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, China, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has released its comprehensive Sustainability Plan—underlining its strong commitment to environmental responsibility and long-term urban benefit.
The sustainability framework, revealed this week, showcases how Chengdu is setting new standards for staging a major international multi-sport event without compromising environmental values. The plan covers everything from infrastructure optimisation to enhanced waste management and post-Games legacy use.
A key highlight is that no new competition venues have been constructed for TWG 2025. Instead, the event will utilise 27 competition venues:
- 12 existing indoor venues,
- 6 existing outdoor venues with facility upgrades, and
- 9 temporarily constructed venues.
This strategic approach reflects a deep commitment to sustainable urban planning. All indoor venues meet China’s green building standards, and all new and renovated facilities follow the official Guidelines for Green and Low-Carbon Construction.
Chengdu’s LOC has implemented strict environmental protocols to support urban optimisation and ecological protection. Waste management is a top priority, with robust systems in place for litter control, collection, and disposal—particularly across spectator areas, lounges, and the Athlete Villages.
A lasting sustainability legacy
The Organisers are also evaluating the long-term viability of upgraded venues to serve the city’s sports-for-all initiatives after the Games. This legacy-focused planning ensures that TWG 2025 contributes not just to elite sport, but also to public physical activity infrastructure for years to come.
IWGA Executive Committee Member Anna Arzhanova, who leads sustainability efforts within the organisation, praised the LOC’s efforts:
“The Chengdu team has shown how it’s possible to deliver a major global event while honouring environmental responsibility. This plan reflects our shared vision for a sustainable future in sport—both in practice and in legacy.”
The IWGA encourages everyone to take a look at the full plan and see how Chengdu is keeping things green for TWG 2025 here.
