Estonian compound archer Lisell Jäätma has been named Athlete of the Month for May 2026 after a remarkable return to the top of the sport, highlighted by her first-ever individual Hyundai Archery World Cup gold medal in Shanghai.

The 26-year-old delivered a career-defining performance at the second stage of the 2026 Hyundai Archery World Cup, defeating world number one Andrea Becerra of Mexico 145-144 in a thrilling compound women's final. The victory was particularly significant as it marked Jäätma's first win over Becerra, who had denied her gold in the compound women's final at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu last summer, where the Estonian claimed an impressive silver medal.

Jäätma's triumph in Shanghai capped an emotional comeback after a challenging 2025 season. Following health struggles that forced her to step away from competition for several months, she returned to international archery in early 2026 determined to rebuild both physically and mentally.

Reflecting on her breakthrough victory, Jäätma described the moment as a turning point in her career.

"I think it was a huge relief," she said. "For a long time, it felt like no matter how much effort I put in, things just weren't going my way. There were moments when I started to doubt myself and question whether I was capable of reaching the top."

The Shanghai gold was the first individual World Cup title of her career and secured her place at the 2026 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in Saltillo (MEX).

"Winning in Shanghai reminded me of what I'm truly capable of," she added. "It showed me how much can change in a year and how strong I can be, both mentally and physically. It reinforced the importance of trusting the process, never giving up, and believing that hard work will eventually pay off."

Part of what made the victory so special was overcoming Becerra, the same opponent who had edged her out in the World Games final in Chengdu.

"I tried not to think too much about the previous final and instead focus on doing my job," Jäätma said. "Of course, it was mentally challenging because I had never beaten her before. The situation in Shanghai was very similar to the one in Chengdu."

"This time, however, I managed to stay composed, trust myself, and execute the shots when it mattered most. Being able to come out on top against the world number one made the victory even more special."

Jäätma has also been widely praised for speaking openly about the health challenges she faced during her time away from the sport. Her honesty resonated with athletes and fans.

"I think it's important to show the difficult moments as well, not just the successes," she said. "I hope that by sharing my story, I was able to help someone feel less alone."

Throughout her career, family has remained at the heart of her success. Coached by her mother Maarika, supported by her father Erki, and competing alongside her brother Robin, Jäätma credits her family with helping her navigate both the highs and lows of elite sport.

"It means everything to me," she said. "I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to share this journey with my family. We get to travel the world together, experience unforgettable moments, and support one another through both the highs and the lows."

After adding World Cup gold to her silver medal from The World Games in Chengdu, Jäätma is looking ahead with renewed enthusiasm.

"My main goal for the rest of the season is to continue enjoying shooting and keep improving," she said. "When I'm enjoying my shooting, that's usually when I perform at my best."

And when asked about returning to The World Games, her answer was immediate:

"As for The World Games 2029, absolutely."
