The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, CHN- José Perurena has set the bar at a world record height. “Chengdu is ready to run the best Games in our history,” declared the President of the International World Games Association (IWGA) at the opening press conference for the 12th edition of The World Games, taking place from 7 -17 August in Chengdu, China.

Addressing over 100 journalists gathered at the Main Media Center (MMC), Perurena outlined his high expectations: “The 27 sports venues are top, top notch. Transport and accommodation are of the highest standard.”

Chengdu’s Deputy Mayor Xu Xingguo echoed this sentiment, describing the event—featuring 34 sports, 60 disciplines, and 256 medal events—as “simple, safe and splendid.” He promised Games that meet “international standards” while proudly showcasing “Chinese style.”

IWGA Vice-President Tom Dielen highlighted the unprecedented scale of this year’s event: nearly 4,000 athletes from 114 countries and regions—the largest participation since The World Games began in 1981 in Santa Clara, USA.

“The numbers reflect the growth, diversity, and talent of The World Games,” said Dielen.

Excellence is a hallmark of The World Games: only the best in each sport earn the right to compete. Two such elite athletes joined the press conference.

Breaking star Qingyi Liu, aka “671”, will represent the People’s Republic of China. At just 19, she made history with a bronze medal in Paris, the first-ever for her country in the Olympic-level breaking competition. Her expectations for Chengdu? “I enjoy the Games and I enjoy competing against B-Girls at a top level,” she said.

Joining her was Chiara Rebagliati, an archer who won gold in Field Archery Recurve at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham. The Paris 2024 bronze medallist is aiming for another top finish: “I am happy to be here and I can't wait to get started,” she said. She will begin her campaign on 11 August at Qinglong Lake Park—one of 27 competition venues, all “Olympic standard,” according to Dielen.

These venues are organised across eight clusters, allowing fans to enjoy multiple sports in one day. Beyond the competitions, visitors can experience the cultural heart of the Games at the TWG Plaza, opening Friday, where sport and Chengdu’s heritage come together.

And for fans worldwide, The World Games 2025 offers a groundbreaking experience: “We are pursuing the most ambitious broadcast plan ever,” Dielen announced. Every highlight will be available via the new The World Games Live streaming platform—bringing the action to global audiences like never before.

Finally, a record-setting 9,000 volunteers are working tirelessly to ensure the success of the Games, driven by José Perurena’s vision: to make Chengdu 2025 the most remarkable edition in the history of The World Games.
