It is with great sadness that the International World Games Association has learned of the passing of Executive Committee Member Volker Bernardi at the age of 56. First elected in 2018, Mr Bernardi was serving his second term on the IWGA Executive Committee, with his mandate extended through 2026.

Volker Bernardi dedicated his life to sport, serving with passion and integrity across many roles in the international sporting community. He served as the Executive Director of World Flying Disc Federation since 2011. He was educated as a sports lawyer and serving as Senior International Sports Administrator and Consultant for a period of more than 20 years. As a member of the IWGA Executive Committee, Bernardi made a lasting impact on the development of The World Games. His work as a sports leader and advocate for integrity in sport has been widely recognised and appreciated by colleagues and friends around the world. He had planned to attend The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, but was ultimately unable to do so.

IWGA President José Perurena expressed his sorrow:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague and dear friend Volker Bernardi. He was not only a valued member of our Executive Committee, but also a person whose dedication and wisdom touched everyone who had the privilege of working with him. His contributions to The World Games and to the global sports community will not be forgotten. On behalf of the IWGA, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”

The World Games family’s thoughts are with Mr Bernardi’s family, friends, and all those within the global sports community whose lives he touched. His contributions to the IWGA and beyond will endure as a lasting testament to his legacy.
