Karlsruhe applies for The World Games 2029

The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has nominated the city of Karlsruhe as a candidate for hosting The World Games 2029. The DOSB announced this in a letter to the IWGA on Friday. Earlier this year, two cities from Germany, Karlsruhe and Hanover, had expressed their interest in hosting the 13th edition of the multi-sport event in 2029. Karlsruhe is the first city to apply for a second edition of the Games: the city organised the third edition of The World Games in 1989.

“We are very pleased with the application of Karlsruhe, and will be working closely with them in the upcoming weeks. While our main focus is currently on The World Games 2025 to be held in Chengdu, China, it is reassuring and a very positive sign that we already have a lot of interest for the following edition. It makes it easier for us to plan the future,” says IWGA president José Perurena.

Karlsruhe Mayor Dr. Frank Mentrup was delighted to receive the news that the DOSB will recommend Karlsruhe as host for The World Games 2029: “This decision shows that Karlsruhe was able to prevail with the special profile of its application: Games in the heart of Europe that are supported by the entire spectrum of society in the city and region.”

The decision on the host for The World Games 2029 will be taken by the Executive Committee of the IWGA and ratified by the Annual General Meeting at the beginning of May. The next edition of The World Games will be held in the period 7-17 August 2025 in Chengdu, CHN.

The next edition of TWG will be in Chengdu (CHN) from 7-17 August 2025. 5,000 participants from more than 100 countries are expected to take part in this 12th edition.
