ThanksCoach Day: The people behind the athletes

ThanksCoach Day: The people behind the athletes

published on 25 September

Behind every great athlete is a coach who guides, challenges and supports them along the way. On #ThanksCoach Day, the International World Games Association (IWGA) celebrates coaches at every level of sport and recognises the dedication, expertise and mentorship they bring to athletes throughout their journeys.

From grassroots sport to the world stage, coaches play a role that goes far beyond training and competition. They build trust, help athletes navigate setbacks and celebrate their successes, while often contributing to their development both on and off the field of play.

At The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, Germany’s Nina Holt underlined the impact of that partnership, winning five gold medals and setting world records in Life Saving. Behind her remarkable performances was coach Holger Friedrich, whose work with Holt reflects the importance of a strong and trusting coach-athlete relationship.

For Friedrich, trust is at the heart of the relationship between coach and athlete.

“The relationship between coach and athlete must be based on trust at all times. Communication is particularly important in this regard, ensuring the coach knows how the athlete is doing during every session.”

The relationship is also about a constant search for improvement, with coach and athlete working together to make the most of every training opportunity.

“The goal is to continually determine how to achieve the best possible results during each training session.”

While medals and records may be the most visible signs of success, much of a coach’s contribution happens away from the spotlight. Reaching the highest level requires not only technical and scientific expertise, but also an understanding of the person behind the athlete.

“Guiding an athlete to the top of the world requires not only expertise in sports science but, above all, a delicate touch, a great deal of time and patience, and the ability to handle defeats and setbacks well,” Friedrich explains.

For Friedrich, one of the most rewarding aspects of coaching Holt has been seeing her continued desire to improve, even after reaching the highest levels of her sport.

“Nina has constantly asked herself what she could do better. She has never been content with mere success but always strives for the perfect race.”

Despite her extraordinary achievements in the pool, Holt has also remained grounded and connected to those around her.

“Despite all her achievements, she has remained down-to-earth. She always makes time to listen to friends and training partners.”

That balance between ambition and humility is a reminder of the broader role coaches can play in an athlete’s development. Their influence can extend far beyond competition results, helping athletes develop the mindset, resilience and values that accompany them throughout their sporting careers.

On #ThanksCoach Day, the IWGA thanks the coaches who dedicate their time, knowledge and energy to helping athletes discover what they are capable of — whether at a local club, on the international stage or at The World Games.

Their work may often take place behind the scenes, but their impact is visible in every athlete they support. Thank you, coaches.

The International World Games Association (IWGA) is a non-profit-making international sports organisation recognised and supported by the International Olympic Committee. The IWGA comprises 40 International Member Sports Federations. It administers and promotes The World Games (TWG), a multi-sport event held every four years that features popular, traditional, emerging and trend sports on its programme. The World Games 2025 took place in Chengdu (CHN) from 7-17 August 2025. 4,000 athletes from more than 110 countries took part in this 12th edition. The World Games 2029 will take place in Karlsruhe, Germany, from 19-29 July 2029, 40 years after it hosted TWG in 1989.
