Membership applications

The IWGA has received seven applications for IWGA membership that fulfil the formal membership criteria. The International Basketball Federation, International Triathlon Federation, International Wushu Federation, Union Cycliste Internationale, Union Internationale Motonautique (International Powerboating Federation), Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne, and United World Wrestling have all applied to become IWGA members. The federations have been invited to give a final presentation to the IWGA Annual General Meeting on 3 April 2017 in Aarhus, Denmark.

The Executive Committee requested that each applicant explain in their presentation, above all, how its membership would add value to the IWGA organisation. The Annual General Meeting will take the decision on the matter.

Currently, the IWGA has 37 member federations. For International Federations to become a Member of the IWGA, their membership with SportAccord is a prerequisite. Another requirement is that the sports, or disciplines of sports, proposed by the federations for inclusion in The World Games are not currently on the programme of the Olympic Games.

The International World Games Association (IWGA) is a non-profit-making international sports organisation recognised and supported by the International Olympic Committee. The IWGA comprises 40 International Member Sports Federations. It administers and promotes The World Games (TWG), a multi-sport event held every four years that features around 35 sports on its programme. The World Games 2025 are currently taking place in Chengdu (CHN) until 17 August 2025. 4,000 athletes from more than 110 countries are taking part in this 12th edition. The latest Games were hosted by Birmingham, Alabama (USA) in 2022.
