Men's and women's canoe polo has been part of the World Games since 2005. Previously a six team competition, for the 2017 edition a seventh team has been added in each of the men's and women's competitions.

Host country Poland will contest their first World Games in both the men's and women's draws, and Canada will contest their first women's event. After qualifying in 2009 as hosts, Chinese Taipei has qualified in their own right to contest the men's competition in 2017. This year will be the first time without an Australian team in the men's or women's competitions.

In 2017 New Zealand will be looking for their first medal following gold in the women's event at the last World Championships. As reigning men's world champions, Italy will be fighting for their first gold to follow bronze in 2013, their first canoe polo medal at the World Games.
