More qualifiers for The World Games 2021

The month of August is very exciting for The World Games fans, because qualifications for The World Games 2021 begin in several sports – and in some they even conclude!

Korfball was the first to begin with qualifications when the World Korfball Championship took place in Durban, South Africa. On the 10th of August it became clear which 8 teams will play in Birmingham: Netherlands, Belgium, Chinese Taipei, China, Germany, Suriname, Czech Republic, and Portugal (in the World Championship ranking order). This is the first time in The World Games history that there is a team from South America in the Korfball tournament.

In Orienteering, Tove Alexandersson (Sweden) and Olav Lundanes (Norway) dominated the World Championships in Norway last week by winning both the Long and Middle distance races. They will have personal places at The World Games 2021. The rest of the orienteering qualifiers will be known in late 2020.

World Fistball Championships ended on Sunday in Germany, and five first men’s teams won their ticket to Birmingham. In 2021, we will at least see the following fighting for The World Games gold: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil and the home nation USA.

Sport Climbers start their quest for places in the 2021 Games at their World Championships, being held in the period 10-24 August in Hachioji, Japan. The event is also the first official Olympic qualifying event in the history of Sport Climbing. Over 253 athletes from 39 different countries are registered to compete in the 12-day event that will include Lead, Bouldering, Speed and Combined. One female and one male athlete will qualify for The World Games 2021 in Bouldering, Lead and Speed. The World Games does not include a Combined event.

At the beginning of September we will also know the first two qualifiers for Women’s Softball, which returns to The World Games after being absent in 2017.

The first athletes to qualify for The World Games were five Muaythai fighters and two Boules playersin May 2019. The Korfball nations and Orienteering World Champions can now join them in training towards 2021!

The World Games is a multi-sport event staged every four years by the International World Games Association under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee. The 11th edition of The World Games will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, 15-25 July 2021. 3,600 athletes from over 30 sports and 100 countries will take part in the Games.
