Chinese Taipei's underdogs created korfball history with their shock 22-18 semi final victory over Belgium, the sport's second best team. All previous finals at both The World Games and korfball's world championships have been strictly Dutch speaking affairs, with the Belgians always claiming the silver medal behind the all-conquering Netherlands. The only exception to the natural order occurred in 1991, when the Belgians in front of their home fans secured an emotional and solitary World championship victory over their Flemish neighbours. Chinese Taipei's dramatic and deserved victory has sent shockwaves across a sport, that has been hindered by the monopoly of the top podium steps by the two European countries.
That Chinese Taipei has the ability to compete at the highest level has been apparent for some time. However to demonstrate it by recording a victory over the world number two is a breakthrough moment. Chinese Taipei made their korfball debut at The World Games in the third edition, which took place in the German city of Karlsruhe. They rapidly improved and have regularly claimed the third podium spot at The World Games. Their bronze medal in 2009 was particularly special as the Chinese Taipei city of Kaohsiung were the hosts. So tonight for the first time ever, Chinese Taipei gets the opportunity to contest for the gold medal. Will they beat the mighty Dutch at their own game in the final which starts at 7pm?
