Busy days to come for the IWGA staff: the preparations for the next Annual General Meeting on the 16th April in Bangkok, Thailand keep the team on their toes. As always, the meeting in the year after The World Games is a special one.
“We are paving the way to a successful future, with regard to our Association and our upcoming event in 2021,” Joachim Gossow, CEO of the IWGA, says.
The election of the Board for the next term until 2022 is one of the major items on the agenda. José Perurena runs for another term as IWGA President, along with Max Bishop as Vice President and Lukas Hinder as Treasurer. Seven candidates have applied for the remaining four seats on the Board.
The delegates of the 37 member federations are also eager to receive information about the programme for The World Games in 2021. After the application phase concluded in January, the IWGA officials have evaluated the proposals of the International Federations for which disciplines shall be on the programme for the 11th edition of the multi-sport event. In its meeting in January, the Board took the opportunity to discuss the official programme for TWG 2021. The decisions of the participating sports will be announced at the AGM.
Which invitational sports will be on the programme will also be clear after the AGM. The organisers from Birmingham, Alabama will also take the opportunity during the AGM to present their ideas on how to present an outstanding event in three years’ time.
The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland might serve as the best example. The delegation of the Organising Committee, headed by Mayor Dutkiewicz, is asked to review the summer of sports in 2017. This brings back some memories, but more important it will deliver useful facts and figures.
“It’s our goal to take the Games to the next level. The lessons learned during The World Games 2017 will help us to meet this goal,” Joachim Gossow stated.
But, this year’s AGM is not only about numbers. It’s also about celebrating the IWGA Athlete of the Year. On behalf of the winning Speed Climber Reza Alipourshenazandifar (Iran) the President of the International Sports Climbing Federation, Marco Maria Scolaris, will receive the award from the newly elected IWGA President.
