The International World Games Association (IWGA) has delegated the management of the anti-doping activities for the 11th edition of The World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, to the International Testing Agency (ITA). The ITA will lead an independent and comprehensive clean-sport programme for the multi-sport event in collaboration with the Birmingham Organising Committee. The World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Albama, USA, will feature 3,600 athletes from more than 100 nations. The competition programme of the Games from 7 to 17 July includes 34 sports.
The International Testing Agency (ITA) is set to manage yet another independent and expert-led anti-doping programme for a major event, after completing its missions for the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 and the upcoming Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in 2022. The International World Games Association (IWGA) has entered into a collaboration with the ITA for its next major event, The World Games 2022, to be held in July in Birmingham, Alabama (USA).
The ITA will be responsible for the delivery of the anti-doping programme for this event, and will collaborate with the Birmingham Organising Committee (BOC) for the on-site sample collection operations and connected logistical activities. For this purpose, the ITA will support the BOC in establishing a dedicated anti-doping function, and will liaise closely with this function for the implementation of the anti-doping programme of The World Games 2022. The ITA will also liaise with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency to assess the scope for collaboration opportunities for the anti-doping operations in Birmingham.
In order to create and implement a tailor-made and targeted test distribution plan for the event, the ITA will prepare a comprehensive risk assessment, identifying risks across all participating sports. The ITA will also develop a sample retention strategy for IWGA, so that samples collected before and during The World Games can be securely stored and re-analysed at a later moment in time.
Alongside preparing and managing the testing operations compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code and the IWGA anti-doping rules, the ITA may also assist the IWGA in the results management of any doping violations that might be discovered through its testing activities. It will also deliver a specific education programme for athletes participating in The World Games, aiming at raising their awareness about the doping control process through dedicated clean-sport training workshops.
Additionally, the ITA will provide online and on-site training sessions for the doping control personnel who will be tasked with collecting samples during the event.

The World Games is a multi-sport event staged every four years by the International World Games Association, organised with the support of the International Olympic Committee. The 11th edition of The World Games will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, 7-17 July 2022. 3,600 athletes from 34 sports and over 100 countries will take part in The World Games.
