Building up to Birmingham: Douglas Brose

Karate World Champion Douglas Brose (BRA) started his World Games career with victory at The World Games 2009 in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei. He now aims to return to the top spot at The World Games in July 2022. He is our latest athlete Building up to Birmingham!

Birmingham 2022 will be Brose’s fourth time at The World Games. “I hope and will dedicate myself to get one more gold medal. This medal will become something historic for me, my category, for my country and for the world. I will do my best during training and preparing for this event, probably the last edition of The World Games in my career.”

Brose has gold, silver and a fourth place from The World Games. “The last editions were excellent, sharing experiences and socialising with other athletes. It's always something really cool. At The World Games you have a limited number of athletes, only the best eight in the world, which raises the level of the competition a lot, making the competition much more interesting. It simulates the same format we had in the Olympics, so I consider this competition to be our Olympics,” Brose says.

Douglas Brose began with Karate at the age of 7. “I've always loved fighting movies and games. But after starting Karate practice, I realised that it was not just about punching and kicking, but rather more a lifestyle, and also character building,” he says. “Karate is a very complex sport, especially when fighting. We repeat the same technique over and over every day. During my training sessions I like to focus on technical training, speed and reaction training. I think these are very important aspects of our sport, and some of my strengths.”

Brose thinks martial arts should be taught in all schools: “Karate + elementary school is a perfect match. The sport, and especially the martial art (Karate), has the power to teach discipline, respect and effort intent, in addition to helping shape your character for the rest of your life.” He does other martial arts too, Taekwondo being his favourite: “I can apply many techniques from Taekwondo in Karatetoo.” In his spare time, when not training or working for his company, he goes kitesurfing, spends time with his family and enjoys barbeques.

Preparation for The World Games will be carefully planned in the months up to July 2022. “After getting the final list of the qualified athletes, I will do specific training related to the characteristics of my opponents. As there will only be seven of them, it is a little easier to scout out each one, learn the characteristics of each athlete and do specific training for them,” Brose says. While The World Games gold is Brose’s number one goal for next year, he has more plans too: “My goal for 2022 is gold medals at The World Games, Pan American Championship and South American Games.”

In Birmingham, Douglas Brose would like to watch Wakeboarding and Tug of War. But if he had to choose another sport to compete in but Karate, it would be Air Sports. His favourite karate-gi is Onyx Oxygen by Arawaza.

The World Games is a multi-sport event staged every four years by the International World Games Association, organised with the support of the International Olympic Committee. The 11th edition of The World Games will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, 7-17 July 2022. 3,600 athletes from 34 sports and over 100 countries will take part in The World Games.
