Russian twins see double success

Russian twins Arina and Dina Averina were left seeing double in the two rhythmic gymnastics finals that were contested last night at the Centennial Hall in Wroclaw. They completed a clean sweep of the top two podium positions in both the hoop and ball individual finals. Both twins recently won three gold medals apiece in the European Gymnastics championship. It was Arina who continued her golden streak, topping the leaderboards in both finals, whilst identical twin Dina had to settle for just (!) the two silvers.

In the hoop final, Dina was the early pace setter, with a dazzling routine that impressed the judges, who awarded the 18-year-old gymnast an astounding score of 17.750.  Finally, just one routine remained and that would come from sister Arina. She effortlessly performed an incredibly difficult routine. After an agonising wait, the results were in, 17.800was the score and Arina had snatched gold by just 0.05 of a mark.

A few minutes later the twins were back out on the mat for the ball final. Arina's excellent routine gave her an incredible score of 18.800. Dina came out knowing it would take something exceptional to dislodge her sister from the gold medal position. She did her best, but was awarded a score of 18.350. Thus the amazing sisters marched to the podium to receive their hoop medals, the Russian anthem played; a few minutes later they repeated the process for the individual ball ceremony, with Arina leaving, clutching her two gold medals.

#23 Jimmy Mickle performs for his family

The number 23 is well known in sporting circles. If you ask many soccer fans who wore that number the response would be David Beckham when he played for Real Madrid. However for one American family who are here at The World Games in Wroclaw, those two digits belong to only one man, USA flying disc sensation Jimmy Mickle.

His family has travelled from Colorado, Arizona and Michigan to Wroclaw, Poland to cheer on their leading man at The World Games 2017. Mum Annette said "We are having a wonderful time in Poland at our first World Games. It is beautiful, the people are so nice, the weather is perfect."

For Annette the trip is not only about supporting her son. Despite this being her first time in Poland, she does have family links to the European country. "We went to Libiaz, (south-east of Krakow) where my grandmother was born."

New World Records

Records continue to fall at the Orbita swimming Pool; Hungary's Petra Senanszky set a new World Record time of 20.52 seconds in Womens Bi fins 50m Finswimming. Not to be outdone, Russian Valeriya Baranovskaya also set a new World Record of 1:25:41 in the Womens surface 200m. The same swimmer was also part of the Russian Surface relay team 4 x 100m, who set a new Games record.

Lucky Thirteen

Friday, thirteen was far from unlucky for the Colombian Flying Disc team, who defeated their two opponents on Friday by scoring thirteen points in each game. They overcame current The World Games champions USA13:12 and then in the afternoon recorded a 13:8 victory over Japan
