2005 Duisburg: Revisited
The curtain dropped on the 23-foot torch which is to remind the host city of The World Games 2005 for many years to come. The President of the International World Games Association, Ron Froehlich, and the two chief executives of the Duisburg Organizing Committee, Mayor Adolf Sauerland and City Treasurer Dr. Peter Langner, unveiled the sculpture on August 10.
In the midst of what will forever be known as Duisburg's World Games Plaza are 2,5 tons of steel artfully crafted as a look-alike of the torch which lit the spirit to eleven memorable days in July 2005.

World Games 2005 sponsor ThyssenKrupp manufactured the sculpture.
The inscription on the base of the sculpture reads as follows:
The Torch of The World Games 2005
This stylized torch was the symbol of The World Games 2005 held in Duisburg and its partner cities Bottrop, Mülheim and Oberhausen from July 14 to 24.
3,131 athletes fought fiercely for medals in 40 non-Olympic sports.
More than 3,000 volunteers ensured throught their commitment the optimal conduct of what was the largest multi-sport event in 2005.
At the venues and here at the World Games Plaza 505,000 people enjoyed the unique blend of sport and culture.
