Two days left in first round

The first round of voting for the IWGA Athlete of the Year 2016 ends on Sunday 15 January. After Sunday the 9 candidates with the most votes proceed to the final round, which continues until 31 January.

Up to now, 6626 votes have been cast for the 16 candidates in the race. At the moment it is the Muaythai fighter and World Champion Sofia Olofsson (SWE) who has taken the lead with 1776 votes. Powerlifting World Champion and World Record holder Ray Williams (USA) is in second place with 1348 votes. “Usain Bolt of Sport Climbing”, Polish World Champion Marcin Dzieński, has advanced to third place with 814 votes.

In 9^th and last final-round place at present is “Archery Mr Perfect” – the only person to have shot a perfect 60-arrow ranking round over 18 metres – Mike Schloesser (NED) with 229 votes, but the sisters and Ju-jitsu World Champions Mirneta and Mirnesa Becirovic (AUT) are only 99 votes behind. Also the rest of the candidates in places 11-16 still have a good chance to get into the final group of 9, should they be able to mobilise their supporters in the last two days of the first round.
