Polish Tourism Organisation Partners with The World Games 2017
The media attention devoted to the Men’s World Volleyball Championships and the UEFA Euro, held two years earlier, helped these two events present Poland to a world-wide audience. The Polish Tourism Organisation is counting on similar results when the 10th edition of The World Games are held next year in Wrocław (20-30 July).
With December marking the end of Wrocław’s reign as European Capital of Culture, PTO vice-president Bartłomiej Walas was quick to point out the significance of this transition from one event to the other - a fact which will undoubtedly help in promoting the city. The partnership agreement between the Wrocław Organising Committee and the PTO was signed end of November during the TT Warsaw trade fair where those in attendance had the opportunity to visit the exhibition dedicated to The World Games.
Urszula Potęga, chairman of the MT fair, thanked the organisers of the TWG stand for preparing such a diverse and interesting exhibition which not only added to the overall diversity of the show, but also provided visitors with a closer look at the disciplines of The World Games.
The 10th edition of The World Games will be the biggest sporting event of 2017 and will draw keen interest from a wide range of media outlets. As Marcin Przychodny, chairman of the Wrocław Organising Committee noted: “We’re talking about 3500 athletes from 100 countries from around the world, competing in 31 sports - in 24 different venues around Wrocław.”
The transmission from the competitions will be broadcast in 100 countries on every single continent. Previous editions of the Games were held in the USA, Great Britain, Germany and Japan and since 2000 have operated under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee.
Many of the sport disciplines of The World Games (such as Karate, Squash, Sport Climbing or Roller Sport) have their own loyal followings from around the world and many of the top athletes are revered as idols in their home countries.
As the organizing city, Wrocław was granted the right to round out the sport program of the Games with additional disciplines of particular significance to local and national fans. The nod was given to speedway racing, American football, kick-boxing and indoor rowing.
One singular feature of the disciplines of TWG is that almost anyone may play them, most often without incurring any great cost at all. This reflects the important values of the Games - availability and universality. Which in turn reflects the role of event as an investment in the sport activeness of local citizens.
But that’s not all - thanks to TWG, Wrocław will get a new, covered, Olympic-size swimming pool complex as well as a track for roller sport races in Millennium Park. The largest investment connected directly with TWG will be the renovation of Wrocław’s Olympic Stadium.
