Flying Disc Qualifiers

WFDF is pleased to announce the national teams qualifying for the Ultimate event at The World Games 2017 which will be held in the city of Wroclaw (POL) from 20 to 30 July 2017. Per the WFDF qualification system, Australia, Canada, Colombia, Japan, Poland and the USA will participate in the IWGA Flying Disc Championship.

WFDF’s qualification process is based on results across the mixed, men’s and women’s championships during the WFDF 2016 World Ultimate and Guts Championships in London with the five top nations combined results together with the host country which was automatically qualified.

“It is always exciting to bring the best teams and athletes in the world together to compete in this prestigious multi-sport event,” commented WFDF President Robert Rauch. The World Games assembles the best athletes from as a showcase for future Olympic ambitions. WUGC winner and World Games title defender Team USA is leading the teams on the road to Wroclaw, followed by last edition’s silver medal winners from Australia and bronze winning Canada.

The teams from Japan and Colombia, the latter having thrilled the home crowds at the last World Games edition in Cali, Colombia, in 2013 by narrowly missing out on the podium in the bronze medal game, complete the field together with the home team from Poland. This makes sure that the people of Wroclaw will get a chance to cheer their own team at the event for its best performance.

“Teams from four continents are represented at our World Games event. We fully trust in the ability of Ultimate as one of our Flying Disc disciplines to impress again in Wroclaw. We expect a great number of spectators, a worldwide TV coverage and a huge media interest. But of course it’s the outstanding performance of our teams will be on focus,” Robert Rauch said.

WFDF Ultimate Committee chairman Brian Gisel added: “WFDF has also modified the eligibility rules for the World Games teams setting the gender ratio of the mixed squads to equal numbers of male and female competitors. We have underlined our commitment to present an event meeting demand of gender equity. I am sure that with this field of teams participating we will add another chapter of success to the story of Flying Disc at The World Games since our first appearance 2001 in Akita, Japan.”
