On Tuesday 12 March, IWGA President José Perurena and IOC President Thomas Bach met at Olympic House in Lausanne (SUI).
The Presidents shared about the latest developments with regards to the preparations of the upcoming Olympic Games Paris 2024 and The World Games Chengdu 2025. They discussed at large the development of non-Olympic sports and disciplines in China. Thomas Bach stressed that the IOC has always attached great importance to the development of non-Olympic disciplines and reiterated the IOC’s full support to The World Games.
President Perurena also updated President Bach about the positive outcome of the 1st IWGA National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and National Sports Organisations (NSOs) Meeting which facilitated the signing of several MoUs, including three major NOCs so far (China, France and Spain). President Perurena emphasised that the NOCs are key in the promotion of athletes participating in TWG.
A potential IWGA Refugee team taking part in TWG 2025 was also discussed with President Bach as well as the IWGA relationships with other multi-sport organisations, governing bodies and key actors of the industry.
At the IOC headquarters, the meeting concluded with a commitment from both sides to further collaborate and develop cooperation in the future.
The International World Games Association (IWGA) is a non-profit-making international sports organisation recognised and supported by the International Olympic Committee. The IWGA comprises 38 International Member Sports Federations. It administers and promotes The World Games (TWG), a multi-sport event held every four years that features around 35 sports on its programme. The next edition of TWG will be in Chengdu (CHN) from 7-17 August 2025. 5,000 participants from more than 100 countries are expected to take part in this 12th edition. The latest Games were hosted by Birmingham, Alabama (USA).
